Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexers: Technology & Market update
Optical networks that demand increased agility, automation and adaptability depend on innovations at the optical subsystem layer. One of the key developments in the last ten years has been the acceptance and mass-deployment of reconfigurable optical add drop multiplexers or ROADMs. ROADMs are optical line cards that perform several functions, including mux-demux of channels, signal health monitoring, and variable optical attenuation for dynamic power management. In this talk, we will discuss the evolution of wavelength selective switches that constitute the building blocks of ROADM line cards and outline some of the emerging changes in optical system nodes as they move from broadcast-and-select to route-and-select architectures. The talk will address technical issues and next-gen requirements envisioned by carriers worldwide.

Speakers
Dr. Thomas A. Strasser of Nistica, Inc
Biography: Thomas A. Strasser received a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Cornell University. He worked in optical fiber device research at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey where his group invented and developed manufacturing for enabling technologies in the next generation transmission platforms of AT&T and Lucent Technologies. Dr. Strasser helped develop the first WSS ROADM-based metro core DWDM system as the Chief Technologist at networking startup Photuris. He currently is developing next generation optical subsystems as the Chief Technology Officer at Nistica, Inc. Dr. Strasser has taught several short courses and served as the OFC 2004 Technical Program Co-chair, and the General Co-chair of NFOEC/OFC 2006. He has contributed 40 patents and over 100 presentations and publications in the field of optics and communication devices.
