Summary of Discussions
- Ranade welcomed all participants for the first meeting on ‘Technology up gradation of Raja Dinkar Kelkar museum’ and briefed about the background of the museum.
- Prof Mani briefed about the project proposal put up to IEEE Hqrs for technological up-gradation of the museum. If the proposal is approved, work should start latest by May 2019. The two major objectives of the proposal are :
- Involving college students in a big way for improving the techno- cultural infrastructure of the museum
- Improving the footfall of the museum and make it an important cultural focal point.
- Later, a brain storming session was held on the major activities that can be taken up. Following points emerged :
- ‘JATAN’ software of C-DAC is being used for digitisation; about 50-60% of digitisation has been completed. This needs to be pursued further towards total documentation and digital cataloguing.
- A touchscreen facility is available at the museum, which needs to be energised
- A first level web site has been developed with the help of TCS, which needs to upgraded
- With a view of making the museum ‘green and smart’, a solar system has already been set up, bring down the electricity consumption drastically. This should be publicised through media.
- An ‘Air curtain’ will be useful to keep the area dust-free and enhance the life of the artefacts.
- On-line museum and Interactive information kiosks will be useful to draw the attention of national and International visitors
- Publicity material in the form of brochures and souvenirs are already available, but others like flyers and coffee Table books (which can be displayed at hotels, guest houses etc) would be useful.
- Among the local public, school children should be the primary target for increasing footfall. Some sort of competition, based on the children’s experiences at the museum will be a motivating factor.
- Selfie points can be set up within the campus, which will make the museum a popular place to visit among the younger crowd.
- A coffee point/ Relaxation lounge can make the place contemporary in its outlook in keeping with other tourist spots.
- Robots can be a major attraction. Some ideas in this connection were : Ganesh dispensing Modaks, Modern gadgets based on the idea of Cuckoo Clock, Eye-catchers at Bajirao Mastani Hall etc.
- A ‘Hall of Fame’ with photos / statues of famous visitors will be a good proposition
- A section on ‘Legends of Pune’ will be attractive. This can also become a source of income and increasing patronage among the top echelons of Pune
- Senior citizens may be trained and their services can be utilized as guides/ other services at the museum.
- At present the annual footfall is about 1.2 Lakh, and the aim should be to achieve at least 3 Lakh by next year.
- Two major hurdles are
--- Inadequate space: Only about 20% of the available artefacts are under display at any one time. Though a 6 acre land is available elsewhere, time frame of its availability is not known.
--- Inadequate parking space: This is major issue which needs to be addressed. Valet parking can be explored.
- The next meeting will be held during mid- March. Interested persons were requested to come with a specific workable plan ( including cost-estimate) of any one activity of their chosen interest.
- Meeting adjourned after thanking Ranades for their hospitality
