Please plan to attend this meeting of the Industry Applications Society. The speaker will be James P. Waltz, PE, CEM, FACFE, FCABE.

Our phones are smart, our cars are smart, our dishwashers and refrigerators, televisions and even circuit breakers are smart - but what about our buildings? This presentation explores what it means to be a "smart" building, and how technology has been and is being incorporated into the built environment. This will address which building infrastructure systems could be made "smart" and which might benefit from advanced technology, where it all started, how it has progressed over time and where it stands today.

Also, the subject of man-machine-interface will be discussed (aka, the human infrastructure), as well as a vision of what the future might hold.

Biography:

About the Speaker: James P. Waltz, PE CEM FACFE FCABE, is an acknowledged pioneer in the field of energy management. Prior to the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973, Mr. Waltz made a personal commitment to energy management as a principal focus of his engineering career. Since that time, he has served as energy management program manager for the Air Force Logistics Command and the University of California's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In addition, he has worked as an energy management engineer for consulting and contracting firms. In 1981 he founded Energy Resource Associates for the purpose of helping to shape the then-emerging energy services industry - and did so through a multiyear assignment to create a (still) very successful energy services business unit for Fortune 500 temperature controls manufacturer. Mr. Waltz's credentials include BSME and MBA degrees, professional engineering registration in three states, founding member, Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Green Building Engineer (GBE) of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), member of the Demand Side Management Society (DSMs) and the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and is a Board-Certified Forensics Engineer and Fellow of the American College of Forensic Examiners as well as a fellow of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers.
