With the proliferation of commercial and military satellites, space is becoming increasingly recognized as a contested electronic battlespace. This class discusses Earth satellites from an Electronic Warfare and Reconnaissance point of view. The class starts with a brief and gentle overview of orbit mechanics and spherical trigonometry – the nature of orbits, the relationship between satellite altitude and orbital period, etc. Then we will discuss radio propagation to and from satellites. During the course, we will discuss some specific satellite issues relevant to EW, including:
• How much of the Earth can a satellite at some height or orbital period see?
• How long can a satellite see a target on the Earth?
• What are the advantages and disadvantages of synchronous vs. low Earth satellites?
• How do you calculate antenna look angles from a satellite?
• How well can you intercept a signal from the Earth using a synchronous satellite receiver?
Each attendee will receive a course syllabus with all visual aids, problem worksheets and handy tables.
