Jeremy Wang, President of Sky Guys, will present the talk.

UAV Systems Engineering and Operations

Have you ever wanted to design, build, and test your own custom drone from scratch? This 1.5 hour crash course will teach the basics of fixed-wing and multirotor UAV engineering, leveraging two case studies covering end-to-end design, analysis, fabrication and testing of a fixed-wing UAV used in surveying, and a commercial multirotor UAV. Participants will learn and apply qualitative and quantitative concepts in aerodynamics, aircraft controls and stability, communications, structures, systems integration, flight testing, and UAV regulations. Undergraduate math and physics knowledge would be an asset but is not required. Whether you are building a small-scale prototype in industry, designing for a UAV competition, or interested in drones as a hobby, this workshop will instil just enough theory along with extensive practical guidance to build your UAV in record time and cost.

Key topics include:

  • Mission and requirements analysis
  • UAV configurations
  • Aerodynamic design and performance
  • Control and stability of UAVs – multirotor theory, fixed-wing theory, and practical implementation on open-source autopilots
  • Structures – composites, foam, balsa
  • Propulsion – gas and electric
  • Avionics, power, and communications (radio, cellular, satellite)
  • Systems integration and ground testing
  • Flight testing and UAV regulations
