Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology, AMU, Aligarh

The IEEE students branch ZHCET, AMU organised a workshop on Grid Connected Solar PV plants on 29 June 2019. The Indian Government has set a target of adding 100GW solar power in the Indian grid by the year 2022 under the National Solar Mission. The mission is an outcome of the national commitment at the United Nation’s Framework Convention for Climate Change, 2016 for reduction in the CO2 emissions.

In the workshop, Dr. Mohd Rihan, Convener Green University Project and Visiting Scientist, National Institute of Technology delivered an introductory lecture on Grid Connected Solar PV plants. In his talk DR. Rihan explained the environmental impacts of the increase electricity generation by using coal or other fossil fuels. The working of the solar plants and their environmental benefits were elaborated. The concept of Net Metering and various business models were also explained using practical examples. Different international, national, and state level regulations were also discussed in an interactive manner.

In order to give a real practical experience to the participants two site visits were also arranged. One visit was to the 3.3MWp Solar Farm of the university; which is a unique installation in any academic institution in the country. It was a great learning and motivating experience for the participants. The other visit was to a 50kW rooftop solar plant in the campus.

The workshop was an attempt towards creating awareness about the environmental concerns of electricity generation sources and training manpower for the national solar mission.

Mr. Mohd Zaid, Assistant professor was the coordinator of the workshop.
