Modern Relay Protection & Control Applications

The advent of microprocessor based relays has brought about significant efficiencies in design and options available for types of protection all in a single relay. Further insight to detailed design for improving reliability and understanding of power systems can be realized with intricate event monitoring and use of user defined logic in these relays to achieve this end. This presentation will examine specific field examples and commissioning results of such applications.

Wheeler O'Harrow, P.Eng. of Shermco Industries Canada Inc.

Biography:

Wheeler O’Harrow is the Director of Engineering for Shermco Industries Canada Inc. who is a registered professional engineer in the provinces of B.C, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. He continues to work for Shermco Canada in his 15th year of service after completing his Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering with a major in power systems at the University of Saskatchewan.

Wheeler has remained a member of the IEEE 1584 standard on the Guide for Performing Arc Flash Hazard Calculations as well as the IEEE 1584.1 standard on the Guide for the Specification of Scope and Deliverable Requirements for an Arc-Flash Hazard Calculation Study in Accordance with IEEE Std 1584 since 2008.

Wheeler continues his professional career by providing consultation on relay protection schemes for substations and industrial facilities including electrical apparatus upgrades, and brownfield retrofit & retrofill projects as well as teaching seminars and courses to general industry on protection & controls, electrical safety, and effective electrical maintenance programs.
