Biography:

Retired United States Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills of the 82nd Airborne is a recalibrated warrior, motivational speaker, actor, author and an advocate for veterans and amputees. Travis’s New York Times bestselling memoir, Tough as They Come, is currently available on sale in bookstores everywhere. Despite losing portions of both arms and legs from an IED while on active duty in Afghanistan, Travis continues to overcome life’s challenges, breaking physical barriers and defying odds. Travis lives by his motto: “Never give up. Never quit.”

On April 10, 2012, United States Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills of the 82nd Airborne was critically injured on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan by an IED (improvised explosive device) while on patrol, losing portions of both legs and both arms. He is one of only five quadruple amputees from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to survive his injuries.

Thanks to his amazing strength, courage, an incredible will to live, the heroic actions of the men in his unit, the prayers of thousands, and all the healthcare providers at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, near Washington D.C., Travis remains on the road to recovery. Every day is a battle, but Travis continues to astound friends and family alike with his progress and with his amazing spirit.

Dr. Ali Abedi Dr. Ali Abedi of The University of Maine

Topic:

Tour of the WiSe-Net Lab and a Novel Maker Space Lab

Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit a unique laboratory built on the University of Maine campus to conduct research on wireless sensing of NASA’s inflatable lunar habitat module.  This work led to development of a leak detection system for International Space Station that was tested in space in 2017.

Another 1000 sqft lab at Carnegie Hall was added later in 2014 to conduct research on indoor navigation in collaboration with VEMI Lab, Activas-Diagnostics, and Nawindor Companies. Cutting edge research in wireless communications area ranging from coding and information theory to wireless sensor networks and space applications are conducted at this state of the art facility with focus on real world applications to provide students with unique training opportunities.

Biography:

Dr. Ali Abedi graduated from National Organization for Development of Exceptional Talents in 1992 with diploma in Mathematics and Physics. He has received his B.Sc and M.Sc degrees in Electrical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology and his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering, from University of Waterloo in 1996, 1998, and 2004, respectively, all with focus on Communication Systems. From 1998 to 2000 he was with the department of Electrical Engineering at the Air-Force University as lecturer and director of undergraduate research center. He worked as lecturer at the University of Waterloo and adjunct professor at Queen’s University in 2004 and 2005 teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, and conducting research funded by NSERC.

Dr. Abedi joined the University of Maine, Orono in 2005, where he is currently a tenured Full Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Cooperating Professor of Computing and Information Sciences. He is also serving as Assistant Vice President for Research (since 2018) and Director of Center for Undergraduate Research (CUGR) at UMaine (since 2013). He was visiting Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD and Guest Researcher at NIST in 2012 and Faculty Fellow at NASA in 2016. Dr. Abedi is founding Director of WiSe-Net Lab where he directs research programs including analytical performance evaluation of block codes, new methods for performance and convergence analysis of Turbo-codes, and applications of error correction codes in wireless sensor networks for structural monitoring, space explorations and bio-medical applications. His research on wireless sensing of lunar habitats was featured on NSF Science360 web site in 2012. He is co-Founder of two startup companies (Activas-Diagnostics and Nawindor).
