IEEE IAS Kolkata: Third Technical Lecture Meeting of 2019
IEEE-IAS Kolkata: Third Technical Lecture Meeting of 2019: 16th October, 2019
The Third Technical Lecture Meeting of IEEE-IAS Kolkata Chpater was organized on 16th October, 2019 at the Electrical Engineering Department Seminar Hall of the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, on the topic “Birth of Power Theory in Alternating Current System.” The talk was delivered by Prof. Gautam Bandyopadhyay, Professor and ex-HoD, Electrical Engineering Department, IIEST Shibpur. The talk gives the audience an idea regarding the introduction of complex quantities like impedance and admittance independently by Kennelly and Steinmetz which ushered a new era in the theory of a.c. circuits. However, Steinmetz’s method of calculation of complex power resulted in considerable confusion when this new idea was introduced. Even in recent times, when efforts are being made to develop new generalized power theories for non-sinusoidal currents and voltages, researchers often review Steinmetz’s work and express their dissatisfaction and disapproval in a pronounced way. In this talk, attempts were made to provide a clear explanation of the confusion associated with the calculation of complex electrical power that has persisted in the scientific community to this day. The talk was attended by 39 participants, including six IEEE members.
