Advanced Engineering for Grid-Optimal, Zero-Energy Buildings: Spokane's Catalyst/Hub Project
IEEE Spokane is proud to present an exciting talk on the Catalyst/Hub project!
This ambitious collaborative effort is putting Spokane's University District on the world map for sustainable building development!
You are invited to register soon, but due to the upcoming holidays, IEEE Spokane requests you to please check your calendar for conflicts before registering.
Innovators across the globe are working to bring sustainable technology to the world’s buildings, which now consume 30% of global energy and over 55% of the planets electricity. In the Spokane University District’s rapidly developing South Landing expansion area, the Catalyst and Hub pair of partner buildings --- now under construction --- is pioneering in this effort. Of the two, the five-story Catalyst building, which will be one of the world’s largest zero energy buildings, is already noted for its cutting edge sustainable construction, based on innovative cross laminated timber (CLT). The neighboring four-story Hub building will host the pair’s central energy plant. This central plant will feature advanced energy management capabilities for both buildings, including each building’s extensive photovoltaic arrays plus thermal and electrical energy storage systems. The center’s energy management operations have been optimized by over 40,000 energy model simulations run by McKinstry, which, in partnership with Avista Development, is responsible for building construction and operations.
The Speakers
Featured speakers for this event will be the two principal engineers responsible for the ongoing development of the Catalyst/Hub project. Spokane-based speaker John Gibson is currently the Chief R&D Engineer, as well as Manager of Distribution Systems Operations, at Avista, and holds BS degrees in both Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Civil Engineering from GU, plus a Masters in Engineering Management from WSU. Seattle-based Nick Edney, CPEng, is currently the Senior Electrical Engineer at McKinstry, and holds Bachelors’ degrees in both Engineering and in Commerce from the University of Melbourne.
