STORY BEHIND RAVANA-1
An event on "STORY BEHIND RAVANA-1" (the first-ever satellite of Sri Lanka), which was organized by the IEEE MTT-s Student Branch Chapter, University of Peradeniya with the collaboration of the Engineering Student Union was held on 23rd of October 2019 at the E.O.E Pereira Theatre.
Mr. Sanath Panawenna, Director General of the Arthur C Clarke Institution for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT), Mr.Tharindu Dayarathne, Research Engineer of ACCIMT, Mr.Kaavinda Jayawardane, Director of the Communication Division ACCIMT and Mr.Shiran Welikala, Deputy Director Technology Transfer Division of ACCIMT were present as the guests for the event. Also, Prof. Gemunu Herath, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, Prof. Manjula Fernando, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Dr. Aruna Gunawardane, Senior Lecturer, Advisor (Senior Treasurer) of the society and other Department Heads, staff members were present at the event.
An introduction to the event was given by Dr. Aruna Gunawardane.
Mr. Sanath Panawenna, the main architect of the project, delivered a presentation on introduction to Space Technology and its applications, satellite communication system applications.
Mr. Tharindu Dayaratne, a product of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, UOP and a key member of the design team of RAVANA-1 satellite, talked about the system design, the engineering model, operational concept, deployment explanation and testing of the project.
On behalf of the Peradeniya Engineering Faculty Alumni Association (PEFAA), Dr. Maheshi Dissanayaka has presented souvenirs for the guests.
The participants were able to gain a vast knowledge regarding Space Technology.
Finally, the event was successfully winded up with the hope of organizing such great events in the future through society.
