Development of Pakistan's First-Ever Indigenous Phased Array RADAR (IEEE ComSoc Summer School)
The 4th Episode of IEEE Asia/Pacific ComSoc Summer School took place in the Faculty of Engineering - The Islamia University of Bahawalpur. It was a 4 day event with 10 technical sessions, two YP STEP sessions, one HAC session, one SAC session, a social night, dinner, virtual tour, idea competition, and city tour.
The speaker, Prof. Dr. Aamir Iqbal Bhatti, Professor, and Dean ORIC, Capital University of Science & Technology, began the session with his own introduction and discussed his research works in CUST, CASPR. He then moved on towards the topic of Phased Array technology and gave a brief introduction of RADARs and how phased array technology works. He covered the fundamental concepts of beamforming, beam steering. He discussed the benefits of phased array systems as well as the few disadvantages such as complexity and high cost. He explained digital wave forming and why it is used. He continued with the ESPA (Electronically Scanned Phased Array) project concept and explained its different phases. He shared the RADAR design analysis tools and design specifications. He even shared the information about the ESPA prototype and phased array RADAR modules. He shared the videos of the experiments being conducted on phased array radars. He concluded the session by discussing the applications and future advancements. In the end, the question-answer session took place.
