Summary of the Event:

The Inauguration of IEEE Engineering in Medicine & Biology Society (EMBS) was held on 12th November 2019 at the Faculty of Engineering, The Islamia University Bahawalpur, Pakistan. This was a major non-technological event of the faculty of engineering and IEEE Pakistan. This event was attended by the students and faculty delegations from the Department of Biotechnology, Department of Computer Science & Information Technology, Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, and Department of Zoology, along with the faculty of engineering to explore the era of multidisciplinary technologies and biomedical engineering. The key agenda of the event was to provide a platform for students and faculty to collaborate and discuss the advancements and involvements of IEEE and Engineering in their respective fields. This event was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Khan Bahadar Khattak the Advisor of EMBS chapter. Dean, Faculty of Engineering Prof. Dr. Muhammad Amjad, Dr. Nuzhat Sial (HOD Zoology), Dr. Dost Muhammad Khan (HOD, Computer Science & Information Technology), Dr. Muhammad Ashraf (Chairman, Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology), Dr. Sajid Hameed (HOD, Veterinary and Animal Sciences), Dr. Jawad Iqbal (HOD, Management Sciences) of The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, joined as the guest of honor to support such an initiative.

 

The inauguration was consist of Ribbon-cutting and cake-cutting ceremony. The Dean of Faculty of Engineering did the honors of both ribbon cutting and cake cutting.

The event started on Tuesday 12th November 2019 with a keynote on “IEEE structure, EMBS chapter orientation and IEEE benefits for student’s faculty and university ranking” delivered by Dr. Khan Bahadar Khattak, Advisor of IEEE EMBS chapter. The session started with IEEE mission and vision followed by the introduction of IEEE governance, organizational structure, IEEE Geographic Regions, IEEE Divisions, IEEE Societies and Councils. Then, IEEE EMBS mission and vision was introduced along with the motivation of EMBS Benefits-Reasons to Join EMBS. Brief overview of IEEE EMBS Chapter Awards, EMBS Sponsored Journals and Co-Sponsored Journals, Major EMBS Sponsored Conferences and Co-Sponsored Conferences was provided to the audience. Benefits of IEEE Student Membership and different IEEE student volunteer’s awards and grants were shared in details. The contribution of IEEE in faculty profile development and university ranking was also enlightening in details.

 

An orientation on “IEEE Bahawalpur Subsection” was then delivered by Dr. Muhammad Ali Qureshi, Chairperson of the IEEE Bahawalpur subsection. He discussed the history of the IEEE Bahawalpur Subsection. He told the audience that IEEE was initiated in South Punjab of Pakistan on 25th March, 2010 when an IEEE Student branch was opened in University College of Engineering & Technology Islamia University Bahawalpur. IEEE Bahawalpur Subsection was formed on 13th February 2016. Subsection Executive Committee members, awards and major events conducted by IEEE Bahawalpur Subsection were displayed to the audience for motivation and contribution to IEEE.

 

The IEEE EMB society inauguration event was successfully conducted and organized by the indefatigable efforts of the IEEE EMBS chairperson Irum Haider and EMBS volunteers. The event was closed with the concluding remarks by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Amjad, Dean, Faculty of Engineering. The appreciation shields were given to the speakers, Honorable guests, advisor student chapter and organizers. In the end, the participants were hosted with Lunch and tea break sessions.

Orientation of IEEE EMBS

Biography:

Dr. Khan received his MS and Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering from International Islamic University Islamabad, Pakistan in 2010 and 2017, respectively. He worked for seven years as a technical expert on various telecom/IT projects implementation in Afghanistan and UAE. He is also involved in designing, consulting and implementation GSM network, DSL network and Satellites BTS backhauling during his technical career. Currently, he is working as an assistant professor in the Department of Telecommunication Engineering, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, Pakistan. He has published around 25 research articles in various national and international reputed journals and conferences. He is also a reviewer of various well-reputed international journals and conferences. He is a member of the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), a professional member of IEEE and a member of the IEEE Bahawalpur Subsection Executive Committee (under IEEE Lahore Section). His research interests include medical image processing, signal processing, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and machine learning.

Orientation of IEEE Bahawalpur Subsection

Biography:

He is working as an assistant professor and head of the department of Telecommunication Engineering, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, Pakistan. He received his M.S. degree in Telecommunication Engineering from NWFP University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, Pakistan in 2008 and PhD. in Electrical Engineering from King Fahad University of Petroleum & Minerals Dhahran, Saudi Arabia in January 2017. Also, he worked as Assistant Divisional Engineer in Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited from 2002 to 2007. His research interests lie in Signal Processing and Communications particularly image and video processing, image compression, machine learning, image forensics and image quality assessment of distortion, enhancement and inpainting, wireless sensor networks and smart grids. He has published around 40 journal articles and conference proceedings in these areas. He is holding the position of Chairperson, IEEE Bahawalpur Subsection, Region 10. He is also the advisor of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Student Chapter. He was also co-founder of the student Branch UCET-IUB.
