Discussion:

Mr. Robau and Mr. Butler provided updates and advancements since their 2017 presentation to our group. Their presentation addressed the environmental, economic, and social impacts of smart home automation and offered a discussion on innovative technologies that have a positive impact on home’s occupants, and the environment. They discussed high-performance sustainable design and construction principles and smart home technology. They described how to model a home’s energy consumption and how to conduct the necessary performance testing. Smart Home Pensacola also features onsite photovoltaic system, coupled with a battery storage system, to achieve net zero energy status. They provided a discussion of the home automation technologies used in the home and various options available on the market.

Biography:

Mr. Robau is Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientist of National Energy USA. Given his extensive technical expertise, he also serves as the company’s Chief Scientist. Mr. Robau founded National Energy USA in 2012 to help commercialize emerging and innovative energy technologies that can help promote environmental sustainability. Before National Energy USA, Mr. Robau served as an Environmental Scientist with the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) in Florida. Leading a team of environmental professionals, Mr. Robau directed research into net-zero energy buildings, energy micro-grids, advanced solar photovoltaic and vertical-axis wind turbines, electrical vehicles, rainwater harvesting, and building automation systems. His passion for high-performance, sustainable design and construction technologies led to his involvement with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon.

 In 2011, Mr. Robau received a White House Award as President Obama’s “Champions of Change” for his dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship. He was honored at a White House ceremony chaired by the U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.

Mr. Robau serves on the Technical Advisory Board of the University of Central Florida’s Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC).  He holds numerous industry accreditations, through the Association of Energy Engineers, Society of American Military Engineers, United Stated Green Building Council, Florida Association of Environmental Professionals, Air & Waste Management Association, Florida Green Building Coalition, and others. He is an instructor for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Exchange annual conference the U.S. Air Force’s Air Force Institute of Technology.

Mr. Robau is the Founder and Executive Director of a not-for-profit called Gulf Coast Energy Network where he leads a group of energy and sustainability professionals dedicated to expanding the renewable energy market across the Gulf Coast.
