IEEE Techno Meetup - Data Privacy and Data Security

The 2nd meetup of the series of meetups for the year 2019/20 organized by the IEEE Sri Lanka section was held on the 5th of September 2019 at the Microsoft Sri Lanka. The topic for the 2nd meetup was Data Privacy and Data Security which is a trending topic in the current context of Information Technology and Information Security. README joined hands with the IEEE Techno Meetup Organizing Committee for the year 2019/20 as the digital media partner while RSVP.LK was the event management partner. LSEG Technology is on board with the organizers as the Platinum Partner of the IEEE Techno Meetup 2019/20 meetup series.

Ms. Umanga Dumbukola, Vice President – Information Security and BCP and Mr. Lasantha Priyankara, Lead Security Administrator graced the occasion as the two invitees representing LSEG Technology. The Sectional Student Representative of IEEE Sri Lanka Section, Tharushi Natasha was also present to witness the event.

The speakers of the 2nd meetup were Mr. Kavinga Yapa Abeywardena who conducted the session focusing on the topic Data Security and Jonathan de La Motte, Account Technology Strategist, Microsoft Sri Lanka who delivered his speech emphasizing the Data Privacy aspect of the topic.

Mr. Kavinga Yapa Abeywardena is a lecturer in Cyber-Security in the department of Computer Systems Engineering of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology who has completed his Bachelor’s degree in ‘Computer Networks' at the University of Hertfordshire, UK and his master’s degree at Kingston University, London. His research interests include cloud security, enterprise risk management, social engineering in information security and privacy management in big data.

Mr. Jonathan de La Motte currently is an Account Technology Strategist in Microsoft Sri Lanka and is the founder of Vertilex (Pvt) Ltd. which provides IT maintenance and services.

Altogether more than 75 participants were present at Microsoft Sri Lanka making it a full house on the 22nd floor of Access Tower II overlooking the busy streets of Colombo 02.

The welcome speech was delivered by Ayomi Gunasekara, the co-chair of the IEEE Techno meetup organizing committee for the year 2019/20.
