Ladd Observatory Tour

The Ladd Observatory is an astronomical observatory of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The observatory was dedicated in 1891 and is named for benefactor Herbert W. Ladd, born in New Bedford, Massachusetts and later Governor of Rhode Island. Because light and air pollution around the growing city of Providence soon made real discoveries impossible, Ladd remains a living museum of 19th century astronomy practices.

The main telescope is a 12 inch (30.48 cm) refractor with a lens made by John Brashear following the design of Charles S. Hastings. The equatorial mount and mechanical clock drive were made by George N. Saegmüller. The telescope is well suited for observing the planets, the Moon and double stars, as well as a few of the bright "deep sky" objects like the Orion Nebula and the great globular cluster M13 in Hercules, just to name a few.

The observatory is located about 200 feet above sea level at the corner of Hope Street and Doyle Avenue on the East Side of Providence. Despite being surrounded by a neighborhood of multi-story houses, there is still a great view of the surrounding cityscape from atop the second story deck adjacent to the observatory dome.

Turn LEFT onto FREEMAN PKWY. (<0.1 miles). Turn RIGHT onto MORRIS AVE. (0.1 miles). Turn LEFT onto DOYLE AVE. (<0.1 miles). End at 210 Doyle Ave.


Directions from the North via Rt 95: Take the BRANCH AVE. exit- EXIT 24. (0.1 miles). Keep LEFT at the fork to go on BRANCH AVE. (0.3 miles). BRANCH AVE becomes CYPRESS ST. (0.4 miles). Turn RIGHT onto HOPE ST. (0.1 miles). Turn LEFT onto DOYLE AVE. (<0.1 miles). End at 210 Doyle Ave Providence.


Directions from the South via Rt 95: Keep RIGHT to take RI-146 N via EXIT 23 toward WOONSOCKET / STATE OFFICES. (<0.1 miles). Take the RI-7 exit toward STATE OFFICES. (0.1 miles). Turn LEFT onto ORMS ST / RI-7. (0.1 miles). Turn LEFT onto CHARLES ST. (<0.1 miles). Turn SLIGHT RIGHT onto RANDALL ST / RI-122 N. Continue to follow RI-122 N. (0.2 miles). Turn RIGHT onto DOYLE AVE. (0.5 miles). End at 210 Doyle Ave
