Agenda

Early 2019 the Italy and Switzerland IEEE Sections decided to start a closer cooperation by organizing joint meetings and events. The first one was the celebration of the 10th birthday of IEEE Day, 20th anniversary of Volta's battery IEEE Milestone (dedicated Sept.15,1999 in Como,Italy) and 60th anniversary of the Italy Section (started in May 1959 in Rome by Mario Tchou, the Chief Scientist of the Computer Division of Olivetti SpA, Ivrea)

The venue for the event was set in the idyllic site of Fondazione Alessandro Volta, Villa del Grumello, on the shores of beautiful Lake Como.In July 2019 on this site a videoclip featuring Alessandro Volta waking up in the era of smartphones and rechargeable lithium batteries was produced by the Switzerland Section and won the third prize of the IEEE Milestone Showcase Contest organized by IEEE Day.

On Tuesday October 1, 2019, 11:30 am the joint celebration started by beautiful weather in the salons of 18th century Villa del Grumello, with a welcome speech by Prof.Giulio Casati, Fondazione Volta and Università dell'Insubria. This was followed by a joint meeting of Italy and Switzerland LMAG members, led by LMAG's Chairs Prof. Antonio Savini of Università di Pavia and by Hugo Wyss, where the attending LMs presented themselves. At 1 pm a short standing lunch was served to the attendees, who could stroll outside in the Villa's garden overlooking the lake.
At 2pm the meetings resumed, led by Section's Chairs Prof. Bernardo Tellini and Dr.Maria-Alexandra Paun, with a first session dedicated to the presentation of 2 innovative projects involving use of batteries, and a second session dedicated to presentation of activities of Student Branches in the two Sections and ways of achieving cross border cooperation in the Italian speaking region of Switzerland, where the University USI and the University of Applied Sciences SUPSI are located. Finally a general discussion closed the meeting, followed by a group picture and a farewell cocktail served in the gardens of the Villa at 5:30pm.

Total attendance was 27 IEEE members and 4 guests from Fondazione Alessandro Volta. A more complete report with pictures and video recordings, including the prize winning videoclip will be published on the Sections websites, courtesy of Marco Giardina, PR activities Switzerland.

A follow-up joint meeting is planned to be held on March 31,2020 in Lugano at the Swiss Scientific Computing Center.
