Invitation for Seminar : How to Write a Strong Discussion and Results Section in a Journal Article
IEEE South Sasks, EGSA(Engineering Graduate Student Association) and the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science would like to invite you to attend seminar on "How to Write a Strong Discussion and Results Section in a Journal Article"
Date: Thursday, February 27th, 2020
Time: 1:00 P.m– 2:45 p.m
Room: RC 050
Lunch will be provided!
Abstract:
Writing a research article can be an overwhelming task, and often, young researchers are not certain what should be included and how the information should be presented, particularly in the “Results and Discussion” section of journal publication. The main reason is that there are no fast and hard rules to achieve this, and discussions don’t follow a format. This section is very critical to the success of the paper, and it is important that it possesses a logical structure and a clear flow. This section represents the “meat” of any engineering article. Some journals may ask you to combine the discussion with the results. This section will be reviewed in detail with examples. The talk will include tips on what should be included in the Discussion section and how to narrate a story and make it impactful but still accessible to the reader. Five common pitfalls encountered in this section will be highlighted such as the lack of organization, not following a logical order, showing results that were never discussed or starting a discussion not related to the results, or drawing conclusions without backing them up. Guidance will also be provided with respect to the style, and a short discussion will take place about what should be in a cover letter.

Dr. Henni
Biography:
Dr. Amr Henni, is currently a Professor of Industrial/Process Systems Engineering, and the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (University of Regina). He graduated from the “Institut Algérien du Pétrole” with a Diplôme d'Ingénieur d’État in Gas Engineering. He obtained a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Stevens Institute in Hoboken, New Jersey) and an MASc in Chemical Engineering (University of Alberta). He received a PhD in Industrial Systems Engineering from the University of Regina.
Dr. Henni taught numerous graduates and undergraduate courses and has overseen capstone projects for more than 250 undergraduate students in three universities. He supervised more than 50 master’s and PhD students. His research group peaked at 30 graduate students in 2017. He is the Engineering Editor of the Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering. He reviewed publications for more than 38 international journals. Dr. Henni has published more than 120 peer-reviewed journal publications as well as 10 book chapters and made more than 60 conference presentations.
Dr. Henni has over 25 years of research experience in the area of carbon capture, produced water treatment using membranes and DAFs, pipe-soil interactions, enhanced heavy oil recovery, and wind turbine simulation. Over his academic career he has been awarded nearly $8 million in research funds, mainly from NSERC, CFI, PTRC, and many industry partners. He worked in the oil and gas sector with Sonatrach (Algeria) and Saudi Aramco (R & D Division), and collaborated with universities in the USA, Denmark, France, Thailand, Indonesia, Algeria, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Qatar.
Fluent in English, French and Arabic, Dr. Henni is the President of Saskatchewan Multifaith and led, for many years, the Regina Multifaith Forum.
