The adoption of IT / Ethernet packet-based communications in the OT or industrial space continues to accelerate. A wide range of wired and wireless technologies many developed by IEEE (TSN, APL, WiFi6, 6LoPAN, IEEE 802.x), ITU and others are all entering commercialization. These standards, associated protocols, and supporting consortia are working in parallel with the standards developing organizations to manage the delivery and content suitable for the industrial market within the next 2 years. This presentation will summarize the range of new and repurposed standards and how future control networks / control systems are likely to be impacted by these technologies.

Ian Verhappen Ian Verhappen

Ian Verhappen is Senior Project Manager at CIMA+, and registered professional engineer in several provinces in addition to Alberta, who specializes in automation and controls engineering. He has been actively involved in the development of international standards for more than 25 years. His work experience includes time in engineering design, and manufacturing organizations. After 20+ years as an End User, then 4 years with a manufacturer, he is now helping end users in the design, specification, selection and commissioning of automation systems from the consultant/EPC environment. Ian has led several ISA and IEC committees including serving as ISA’s Vice President of Standards & Practices. He’s the international chairperson for IEC SC65C Industrial Networking, convener (chairperson) of SC65E WG10 (Intelligent Device Management) and provides guidance to the ISA Standards and Practices Board on the relationship between ISA and IEC.

 

Ian is also a monthly columnist for Control magazine on wireless and industrial networking topics.
