The Impact of Technology in Impoverished Areas
Abstract: In this talk, we will discuss how advances in technology have lowered the cost to provide innovations that can empower people in impoverished areas. For example, solar panels are now enabling communities that had no access to power to light their homes, charge their phones, power irrigation systems and refrigerators and enabling them to communicate with and learn about the rest of the world. Also, sensors, mobile devices, and access to cellular signals and the cloud are delivering information and services to remote rural areas. We will present several solutions developed by the School of Engineering at Santa Clara University to illustrate the empowering potential of these technologies.
