1: The Legal Implications of  CA SB327 (New CA IOT Security Law) for Electrical Design Projects: (Bob Hunter - Alphaguardian)

On January 1, 2020 a new era of security requirements begins in California. SB327, also known as the IoT Security Law, affects all devices sold in California which have an Ethernet or Bluetooth port.  The law requires that all of these devices provide a means to securely authenticate any communications to or from a device.  Modbus, BACnet and most SNMP devices do not meet the criterion of the law and will require external security be added in order to be compliant.  The law is enforced by the California Attorney General’s office through the local county and city agencies and has the teeth to levy substantial fines.  In this presentation, we will discuss how to ensure that your designs live within the confines of this new law to ensure that you and your firm will be compliant to the law's requirements.

Bob is Founder and CEO of AlphaGuardian Networks, a pioneering leader in the field of secure management for the Industrial Internet of Things.    Bob is the author of several patents, a published author and frequent speaker.

2: 2017 NEC Code Update (Mike Stone, NEMA)

This session will offer an overview of the most significant changes associated with the 2017 NEC, including new articles, code-wide changes, and a look forward to the next NEC.

Mike Stone is the West Coast Field Representative for NEMA

3:Grounding Recommendations for On Site Power Systems ( Brian Pumphrey, Cummins Pacific)

This presentation will focus on equipment and system grounding.  We will cover the purpose of grounding and detail schemes to detect ground faults; leading to a better understanding as to the selection of transfer switches (3-Pole vs 4-Pole), resistance grounding, and grounding of paralleled generator sets.

Key Objectives:

  • Explain grounding best practices and code requirements for both system and equipment grounding.
  • Define the requirements for proper ground fault sensing to help design and install ground fault systems that work correctly
  • Define when a 3 pole verses 4 pole transfer switch should be used to reduce ground current loops and assure ground fault detection systems work correctly.

Brian Pumphrey is an Application Engineering Manager with Cummins Pacific

4:  On-site Energy Storage Systems   (Jan Gromadzki , Tesla)

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for commercial and utility applications: An overview of today’s product landscape, applications, and installation and safety best practices.

Jan Gromadzki leads Product Management for Tesla’s commercial and utility energy storage systems. He joined Tesla in 2016 as a Powerpack Project Engineer to support the global growth of battery installations, and most recently led the launch of Megapack, Tesla’s latest utility-scale battery storage system. Prior to Tesla, Jan worked for UGE—a small wind turbine startup in NYC—where he supported product design and deployment of installations globally, including in Qatar, India, and on the Eiffel Tower. Jan holds Bachelors of Arts and Engineering degrees from Dartmouth College.

5:Intelligent Circuit Breakers (Ali Vakili, Eaton)

Ali will offer an overview of molded case circuit breakers with a review of MCCB development, and new technologies.  Specific topics include:

A history of The MCCB

Understanding Overcurrents and Over Loads

A Review of Overcurrent Protective Devices

A Review of Time /Current Curves

Applicable Codes and Standards

Electronic Circuit Breaker Technologies

 The Intelligent Circuit Breaker

Q&A

Ali Vakili is currently the Eaton District Application Engineer and was our  2017 SF
IAS Chapter Chair.
