Abstract:
This presentation describes Systems Thinking using a standardized definition and set of skills that Systems Thinkers must master. A novel method for practicing and evaluating Systems Thinking skills using a computer game is presented, along with an option for the audience themselves to participate in cutting edge research by playing the game. Systems Thinking – the ability to understand systems, predict how they behave, and figure out how to change them – is widely regarded as critically important across many different fields; it has been said that skillful use of systems thinking skills could have prevented such disasters as World War II, the Great Depression, and the Challenger space shuttle disaster, as well as lessened or avoided the effects of many major environmental disasters. In an age of complex systems and global interconnectedness, it is now more important than ever to effectively apply Systems Thinking skills to all kinds of decisions, from politics to economics to large scale engineering problems.
Bio:
Mr. Ross Arnold has been a software and systems engineer for the United States Department of Defense for over 18 years. He currently serves as a Senior Research Engineer at the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center, where his research focuses on artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and swarm algorithms. Previously, Mr. Arnold worked as a Visiting Research Scientist for the United States Military Academy at West Point. Before his time at West Point, Mr. Arnold worked as Senior Research Engineer at the Japan Air Systems Research Center in Tokyo, where he led cooperative research efforts between the United States Department of Defense and the Japan Ministry of Defense in the area of autonomous aerial systems. Mr. Arnold has also spent many years as Chief Engineer and Software Lead for a variety of defense systems. Mr. Arnold holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, a Master of Science in Software Engineering, and is nearing completion of a PhD in Systems Engineering.
