The IEEE PELS Students chapters of GPREC conducted an event on “Electric Vehicles-Power Electronics Applications”. This event is a Technical talk delivered by Dr. P.V. Raja Gopal garu, Retd GM, BHEL Power Electronics R & D division. During this talk the speaker explained about the importance of power electronics in our day to day life. Later on he delivered the applications of power electronics in Railway applications. He gave the technical developments in power electronics. Also he gave some examples on how power electronics is sued in rail transportation.
Objective: The objective of this event is to enhance the technical knowledge on applications of power electronics in rail transportation.
Target Audience: The students of Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
Outcome: At the end of the talk the students will be able to know the importance of power electronics and its applications in railways.
Attendance: A total of 52 students were present for this seminar of which 24 are IEEE and remaining are Non IEEE members.

Biography:
Dr.P.V.Rajgopal is a B.Tech (EEE) graduate from NIT(REC), Warangal. He has a Ph.D. degree (in Power
Electronics) from IIT-Bombay, Mumbai. He has a PGDM (Marketing) from AIMA, Delhi. He is a Senior
Member of IEEE, USA. He is now the Chairman, PES/IAS/PELS Joint Chapter/ IEEE-Hyderabad Section, India
His Publications are a) Patents: 3 Nos. & b) Papers : 12 Nos.
He worked in BHEL, Corporate R&D at Hyderabad for more than 36 years and retired as Additional General
Manager (Power Electronics Systems Group). He held many Senior level assignments in New Product
Development, Innovation & Technology Development, Market Development and Human Resource
Development with BHEL. He was also responsible for starting and developing the Power Electronics Systems
Group in BHEL (R&D). BHEL is an organization of national & international repute manufacturing equipment
for Power / Energy / Transmission / Industrial / Transportation Sectors in India and is a Maha-Ratna PSU in
India.
As Project Leader / Group Head, he was involved in the successful development of various new products like
Electric Vehicles/ AC Drives/ DC Drives/ Special Power Supplies for Transportation/ Power Plants/ Renewable
Energy Systems & Industrial Applications.
Some of the major products are :
1) IGBT Based 3-Phase AC Propulsion Drive Systems and GTO & IGBT based Auxiliary Power Supply Units
for Electric Locomotives / Diesel Electric Locomotives/ EMUs/
2) Battery Powered Electric Vehicles/ Fuel Cell Powered Electric Bus/
3) 1.8MW/ 6.6kV/ High Power IGBT Based Variable Speed Induction Motor Drive System for ID Fan in
Thermal Power Plants/
4) Solar PV based Power Plants & Grid Connected Power Conditioner Unit (PCU) of 250kW/ 500kW/ 1MW
5) DC to AC Power Conditioners for Fuel Cell based Power Plants/
He was also the Group Head, Human Resource Development & Advanced Technical Education (HRD&ATE)
Group of BHEL/ Corporate R&D Division and was responsible for training Engineers/ Supervisors/ Workmen
and he proactively organized about 170 Programs in 2 years of this assignment.
He had Specialized Training at ABB’s Transportation Division – ADtranz – Switzerland
He was trained in Programming and Testing Of Control Electronics (Module-1) for Power Converter for AC
drives of 6000 HP Locos (WAP5/WAG 9) supplied by ABB to Indian Railways. The Control Electronics
Hardware type used was MICAS-S2 System.
His areas of interest are Power Electronics Systems & Drives / Special Power Supplies for Rail Transport/
Electric Vehicles (Hybrid//Battery Powered) and Renewable Energy Systems.
He was also Project Guide for Ph.D /M.Tech / B.Tech / MBA students of various Colleges.
He was Ph.D. Guide / Supervisor to an Associate Professor of EEE Dept. in an Engineering College.
She was awarded a Ph.D degree in the faculty of “Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE)” in Aug-2016.
Her Research work was carried out in the area “Energy Management Systems for Hybrid Electric Vehicles”.
He is presently teaching / training in a few institutions in Hyderabad.
