Biography:

Dr. Upal Mahbub completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. Degrees in EEE from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in ECE from the University of Maryland College Park. He is currently a Senior Engineer at Qualcomm, San Diego, CA, USA. His research interests include active authentication, face/object detection, recognition and verification, human activity analysis and machine learning for extended reality.

Prior to joining Qualcomm, he worked as a lecturer and later as an assistant professor at BUET. Dr. Mahbub is a recipient of the Best Paper Awards at IEEE UEMCON 2016 and IEEE ICCIT 2011, and the Best Poster Award at IEEE BTAS 2016. He is serving as a program chair of the IEEE IVPR 2020, associate editor of Int’l J. of Comp. Vision and Signal Proc. (IJCVSP), a guest editor of the Elsevier Pattern Recognition Letter’s special issue on ‘Advances in human action, activity and gesture recognition’ and, an editor of the upcoming book “Contactless Human Activity Analysis” from Springer-Verlag, Germany.

Dr. Mahbub is a Senior Member of IEEE, former chair of IEEE GOLD Bangladesh and former student activities chair of IEEE Bangladesh Section. His hobbies include arts and crafts, traveling, writing and playing board games.
