Venue: ECE Building, BUET

No. of Participants: 37

This event was arranged by IEEE EDS BUET Student Branch Chapter to learn the basics of Lumerical simulation software. A.K.M. Hasibul Hoque, Lecturer, Department of EEE, Green University of Bangladesh. Dhaka; B.Sc in EEE (BUET), M.Sc (ongoing) was the instructor of this workshop. He talked about how Lumerical develops photonic simulation software tools which enable product designers to understand light, and predict how it behaves within complex structures, circuits, and systems. These tools allow scientists and engineers to exploit recent advances to photonic science and material processing to develop high impact technologies across exciting fields including augmented reality, digital imaging, solar energy, and quantum computing.

The workshop was conducted over mainly three sessions. At first, the instructor began by giving the participants a brief overview of Lumerical simulation software, how the software runs the simulation and the algorithm behind it. The main focus of the workshop was on Lumerical FDTD simulation, which solves Maxwell’s equation using finite difference time domain method (FDTD). He introduced the basic idea of Plasmonics, mainly surface plasmon and how one can carry out surface plasmon simulation using Lumerical FDTD. The participants were introduced with the graphical user interface of FDTD software and it’s different parameter setting options. Working with material database, importing new material, user-defined material, generating desired structure and groups for simulation was discussed. The instructor also focused on giving the background knowledge for setting each parameter for a simulation.

The second session started after a prayer break at 5PM. In this session, applications of FDTD software for complex structures were shared with the participants. They simulated silver nanowire with the guide of the instructor to find different properties. The participants were also introduced to scripting in Lumerical FDTD in this session. Using script, they did an angle sweep to find out at which angle of incidence of a source there would be an SPP mode excited in metal-dielectric surface. Then at the concluding stage of the workshop, the instructor inspired the participants to create their own design and simulate the result. Then, in the third session, a one to one question-answer session was held where the participants asked their questions and shared problems with the instructor to find a solution.
