The PES and IAS Chapters will sponsor a technical seminar on the topic of Power Factor Correction Capacitor and Harmonic Filtering application. The session will be held on Friday, February 21, 2014 at PSE&G’s Hadley Road Facility, 4000 Hadley Road, South Plainfield, NJ 07080-1192.

Topic:
The seminar will cover product explanation and application on Power Factor Correction Capacitor Banks and Harmonic Filters for 208v up to 35 kV network:

Power Factor Correction Capacitor
• Financial and technical reasons of installing capacitor
• Electrical Network with and without capacitor
• Selection of capacitor on motors and main substation
• Several areas of installing capacitor on an electrical network

Harmonic Filter
• Harmonic explanation and by definition
• Capacitor and Harmonic in an electrical network
• Effect of Harmonic Distortion
• Parallel and series resonance with capacitor and harmonic filter
• Review of harmonic filters: BandPass, HighPass and C-Type
• Power Factor Correction in presence of harmonics
• Calculation of Parallel resonance
• Eliminating harmonic current resonance
• Review of a project subject to severe harmonic filtering
• Review of Harmonic Filter component rating: capacitors, reactors, etc.
• Review of some of Power Survey’s project in service

Biography: Sylvain first studied to become an electrical technician and then completed a bachelor degree as an Electrical Engineer in Power Systems. Sylvain was an Engineering Manager & National Product Manager for ABB in the capacitor and harmonic filter field for 12 years. 10 years ago Sylvain left ABB to join Power Survey International as a partner of this company. Sylvain has done numerous articles and conferences in this in this exciting Power Quality field.

The seminar fee includes lunch, refreshments and handouts. Non-members joining IEEE within 30 days of the seminar will be rebated 50% of the IEEE registration charge.

Four hours of instruction will be provided. If desired, IEEE Continuing Education Units (0.4 CEUs) will be offered for this course - a small fee of $45 will be required for processing.
