ABSTRACT:

The concept of computing usually implies calculation processes either by mathematical means of numbers and symbols or by a computer. Computing processes done by humans employ mostly words in computing and reasoning, arriving at results linguistically expressed from linguistic premises. Computing with words applies the same view to their computing processes aiming at obtaining linguistic outcomes from linguistic inputs. Because words have fuzzy denotations when they are used by human beings, the paradigm of Computing with Words (CW) is a branch of Zadeh’s fuzzy logic. Decision makers are expected to assess numerically their preferences. The complexity of decision problems implies uncertainty that can be modelled using linguistic information, mainly based on fuzzy based linguistic approaches. However, these approaches only allow the elicitation of simple assessments composed by either one label or a modifier with a label. The necessity of more complex linguistic expressions to interpret decision makers’ knowledge has led to extensions of classical approaches that allow the construction of expressions and elicitation of preferences in a way closer to human cognitive processes. This talk will provide an overview of the broadest fuzzy linguistic approaches used for CW in decision making and some challenges that future proposals should achieve to improve complex linguistic modelling in decision making.

 

SPEAKER: 

Rosa Rodríguez received the M.Sc. (2008) and Ph.D. (2013) degrees in Computer Sciences from the University of Jaén, Spain. From 2013 to 2014 she held a postdoc position with Vienna University of Technology (Austria). She currently undertakes a fellowship with the University of Jaén (Spain). Rosa has published 40 papers in journals indexed in JCR, 22 of them in Q1. Her h-index is 18 with 2790 citations (WoS). She is in the top 1% of cited authors in Computer Sciences. She received the IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems Outstanding Paper Award in 2012. Rosa has collaborated on 14 research projects. She is Editorial assistant in International Journal of Computational Intelligence Systems and Associate Editor in International Journal of Fuzzy Systems. Rosa’s research interests are in intelligent systems and computer sciences. Her research interests relate to decision support systems, data analysis and simulations, knowledge discovery and data mining.
