Abstract:
First proposal for left-handed material or meta-material was made in 1967 and it was experimentally studied in 2001,exhibiting negative refraction with plasmonic meta-material. The application potential of meta-material henceforth proliferated exponentially in the design of cloaking and sub-wavelength imaging devices, antenna and passive components at microwave and higher frequencies. In course of time it was also found to exhibit many more novel and tailor able functionalities with gain assisting, non-linear and switchable properties having application possibilities in laser and high speed optical switching. Meta-surfaces has recently emerged as an efficient technique to manipulate wave front dynamics of electromagnetic signal at sub-wavelength extent at microwave to optical frequencies with application potential in, absorbers, transformation optics, and so forth. The purpose of this presentation is to give a comprehensive road-map of the progress of meta-material and meta-surface research from its inception to recent times.

Prof. Subal Kar
Metamaterials and Metasurfaces—An Emerging Field of Research in Microwaves and Photonics
Biography:
Dr. Subal Kar is former Professor and Head of the Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics (IRPE), University of Calcutta. He taught microwave engineering at IRPE, CU during 1983 – 2016. His field of research includes microwaves/millimeter-waves, metamaterials, terahertz technology and high energy physics. He has three patents to his credit and more than 100 research publications in peer reviewed journals.
Dr. Kar was Fulbright scholar to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, CA, US during 1999 – 2000 when he worked on RF structures for muon collider. He was visiting scientist to Kyoto University, Japan, Oxford University, UK, Cockcroft Institute, UK, EPFL, Switzerland and many other universities and institutes around the world.
He has authored a book entitled “Microwave Engineering—Fundamentals, Design and Applications”, published by Universities Press, 2016, and has contributed a number of book chapters published by Elsevier, Springer and others
