This talk introduces optical access technologies and the latest standards effort in both ITU and IEEE. It focuses on the passive optical network (PON) applications as 5G fronthaul transport network. 5G network requirements on bandwidth and latency are analyzed. Different solution proposals are compared. Various function mappings between 5G network CU/DU/RU to PON are discussed to meet the requirements. Recent industry test and trial results from top operators and vendors are reported to provide application examples. Future directions are reviewed in the last part of this talk to motivate R&D in this promising area.

Topic:

Optical Access Technologies for 5G Network Fronthaul

Biography:

Dr. Yuanqiu Luo is currently a Director of Optical Access Standards at the Standardization & Industry Department of Futurewei Technologies, USA. Before joining Futurewei, she was with NEC Laboratories America, Princeton, NJ. She received her Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark.

Dr. Luo has been heavily involved in the R&D effort of optical access networks for more than 15 years. She is an editor of ITU standards G.987.3 (XG-PON), G.9807.1(XGS-PON), G.989.2 (NG-PON2), G.9802, G.9803, G.Sup66 (PON for 5G fronthaul), and G.hsp.ComTC (50G-PON). She is the editor of IEEE standards 802.3cp (Highspeed BiDi). She was a clause editor of IEEE standards 802.1AS (time synchronization). Her major projects include the first XG-PON trial with Verizon, PON as wireless xhaul, the first NG-PON2 prototype system, and PON for 5G transport.

Dr. Luo authors more than 60 publications. She holds more than 30 US patents. She was honored with an IEEE Standards Award in 2011. She received the Best Paper Award from IEEE & OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology in 2013.
