Microgrids are small autonomous power systems. Microgrids are, in effect, a philosophy of life, which arises from the idea of generating and consuming energy at the same point, thus avoiding long-distance electricity (energy) transmission losses. The idea can be translated into water, food or life. The talk will present the human brain-body as an example of a hierarchical and distributed system. Then the concept of microgrid will be presented in different areas, from terrestrial to space applications. Finally, the talk will present the impact of microgrids research on industry and society.
