Transformer oil analysis is widely used for detecting abnormal conditions in insulating fluid-filled, high voltage electrical equipment in service. This presentation presents information and recent Australian case studies concerning:

  • application of DGA to mineral and non-mineral oil filled transformers.
  • application of DGA to load tap changers
  • importance of correct sampling methodology
  • testing and interpretation of results to evaluate the condition of the liquid and solid insulation
  • appropriate actions available to further investigate & manage problems
  • accessing, analyzing and gaining insights from large amounts of condition monitoring data

Topic:

Transformer oil analysis: identification & management of abnormal conditions

I have worked in the transformer oil industry since 2011. Areas of interest include condition monitoring of power transformers through oil analysis, thermography, visual inspection and electrical testing. Also life extension via oil filtration.
The focus of my role with Ampcontrol (Oil Services Manager) is providing technical support within the Ampcontrol group in regard to transformer oil testing, oil analysis’ condition assessment, oil filtration and alternative fluids (e.g. natural and synthetic). We are developing a digital asset management platform.
I am working to increase our collective understanding of power transformer condition through application of existing and emerging scientific technology.
Before moving to Australia, I worked for Shell Oil in the UK and Netherlands, working within a software development group that created software solutions to improved processes across Shell's chemical & engineering technology divisions.
