NFPA 101 Code Changes 2021 - IEEE Advancing Technology
IEEE Advancing Technology for Humanity - As codes and standards change we must keep up with the latest technologies in order for us to advance. Today we will discuss the changes to the 2021 Fire and Life Safety code NFPA 101 in order to advance our technologies in buildings and structures.
Electronics, controls, power, energy, computers, fire protection, aerospace and communications all need to be updated in order to advance technology for humanity. Join us today for an update on the national fire protection association Life Safety Code as we advance technology. We will discuss:
- Provisions making sprinklers mandatory in new daycare occupancies with more than 12 clients
- Enhanced sprinkler requirements for existing high-rise buildings containing ambulatory health care, business, industrial, or apartment building occupancies
- Amended construction limits for existing nursing homes
- Clarification that non-required fire doors are not subject to the requirements of NFPA 80, including annual inspection
- New provisions for temporary barriers to separate areas under construction in health care and ambulatory health care occupancies
- Updated criteria for special amusement buildings
- Requirements making sprinklers mandatory for new bars and restaurants with an occupant load of 50 or more
- Minimum requirement added for fire department two-way communication signal strength in all new buildings
- New carbon monoxide detection requirement for existing hotels and dormitories
- Introduction of a requirement for low-frequency fire alarm notification signals in new hotel, dormitory, and apartment building sleeping rooms per NFPA 72®
- Expanded provisions covering burglar bars/grates on means of escape windows in residential occupancies

NFPA 101
Changes to the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. Over the last three years - What changed? How does it affect new building construction? Computers, communications, electronics, controls, lighting, sprinklers systems? In order to advance technology we must adopt and acknowledge changes for the betterment of all. Today we will discuss these changes.
Biography:
With over 35 years in the industry Mike has designed fire and life safety for the public works department building, the Sarasota Emergency Field Operations building and Anderson Elementary school including egress lighting, exit signs, smoke/heat detectors, strobes and fire alarm control panels for high rise buildings. He has also served as code reviewer for the city for buildings such as Trump Tower and Rauner Family YMCA. Mike has his PE license in several states including Washington, Texas, Illinois, and Missouri.
Mike presently works as a design engineer Fire and Life Safety for the Salas O’Brien corporation in Seattle Washington and has an MBA, BSEE from the Florida Institute of Technology.
