IEEE Young Professional Sri Lanka in collaboration with Orel IT, aims to impart AI knowledge and to develop related practical skills of young Sri Lankan individuals with an analytical background and an interest in AI. The development of an AI-based industry in Sri Lanka can contribute immensely to move forward with the rest of the world with a rapidly growing economy. Sri Lankan education system, producing engineers and technology-savvy students, is rich in resources for this purpose which is conducive for creating a knowledge-based economy with AI at its helm. The late but booming avenues of the AI-Driven Businesses and Ventures are becoming widespread across every industry. Many business professionals and engineers are transitioning to data-related jobs where the sub-branches of machine learning are involved. 

“AI-Driven Sri Lanka” a project by IEEE Young Professional Sri Lanka , aims to impart AI knowledge and to develop related practical skills of young Sri Lankan individuals with an analytical background and an interest in AI. The core idea of this panel discussion was to give an overview of understanding and awareness of the application of AI in the industry and research avenues of AI in academia.

Dr. Ajith P. Madurapperuma of Open University of Sri Lanka

Biography:

Dr. Ajith P. Madurapperuma, is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Open University of Sri Lanka. He has held the positions of Acting CEO and Director of the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka and the Chairman of SLCERT. He is the Director of the Industry Liaison Center of the Open University of Sri Lanka and is a Senior Lecturer attached to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the same university. He was the Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology of the University of Moratuwa. Previously he served as the Director, Career Guidance Unit and the Director, Graduate Foundation of the University of Colombo. He also served as a senior lecturer at the University of Colombo School of Computing. Dr. Madurapperuma has over 25 years’ experience in academia as well as experience working as a consultant in many national projects. He was involved with the World Bank technical assistance team that helped set up the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka. He has also worked as a Technical consultant in several World Bank and ADB funded projects. He has served as an IT advisor to several governmental organizations. His academic qualification includes a PhD and a MSc in Computer Science from the University of Wales, Cardiff and a MSc in Computer Engineering from ISPJAE, Havana.

Biography:

Keshan Sodimana

Keshan is a technology enthusiast and an evangelist, who started his career as a Software Engineer and then moved on to Google Inc as a Country Engineer Consultant and then to Google AI as a Researcher. His passion for enabling the latest technologies to the community led him to initiate GDG Sri Lanka in 2009. He currently works as a Google Developer Expert in Machine Learning while working as the Chief Data Scientist at Sach Consultancy; a company that focuses on improving healthcare systems with data analytics and machine learning. Moreover, he is an avid reader and a traveler.

 

C D Athuraliya

CD Athuraliya is a co-founder of ConscientAI, an AI technology company based in Colombo, and a research fellow at LIRNEasia. He is also a visiting lecturer in applied machine learning. Prior to his current positions, he was a member of WSO2 Machine Learner team and a big data researcher at LIRNEasia. He has over 6 years’ experience in machine learning, deep learning and computer vision. In 2015, he founded the first machine learning meetup in Sri Lanka. He has research published at top international conferences and also been invited to machine learning conferences held at Google and OpenAI. He has supervised related undergraduate and postgraduate projects at University of Moratuwa and University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

 

Romesh Ranawana

Romesh Ranawana is Co-Founder and CTO at TENGRI UAV PTE LTD, a global provider of UAV systems. Romesh was co-founder and CTO of SimCentric Technologies, a global military simulation company. Romesh exited Simcentric in 2019. Romesh was previously a tutor at the Computing Laboratory of the University of Oxford, a Lecturer at the University of Peradeniya and a Computer Scientist at Oxford based Pharmaceutical Company InhibOx. Romesh has a PhD in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from the University of Oxford. He has more than 20 peer reviewed book chapters, journal articles and conference articles.

 

Upendra Peiris

Upendra Pieris, Vice President of Orel IT is an exceptionally skilled personality and the backbone of providing leadership to over 4500 employees to drive the vision of a leading IT firm in the country. He is an exceptionally skilled at possessing vast knowledge in a plethora of IT-related fields such as Project Management, IT Services Management, Business Analysis, Project Planning, Software Project Management, Business Process Management and many other related areas. Upendra holds his Ph.D from The European International University in Paris and also a former alumnus of the Asia E University Malaysia where he completed Master’s degree. As a very versatile individual, he holds several positions in Sri Lankan ICT Professional Bodies as Advisory Committee Member in IT/BPM for EDB of Sri Lanka, the Board Director at the ICT Industry Skills Council of Sri Lanka, Executive Committee Member for the FITIS – Software Chapter and Digital Chapter and Committee member at SLASSCOM Entrepreneurship Forum.
