Electrifying Transportation for Climate Action and Clean Air in Alexandria

The City of Alexandria is pursuing aggressive actions to reduce transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions attributed to City operations and throughout the community to support the Alexandria community’s strategic climate change action goals. These actions are set forth in the City’s Environmental Action 2040 and the forthcoming Alexandria Mobility Plan. Actions include reducing vehicle miles traveled, the single occupancy vehicle trips, leveraging alternative mobility solutions and increasing use of public transit systems, and the electrification of transportation systems and increasing use of clean electricity resources.

This presentation will discuss the efforts the City of Alexandria is taking to advance electrifying transportation in the Alexandria community. The presentation will include discussion on integrating electric vehicles into the City’s fleet and implementing charging infrastructure at City facilities; the development of the City’s first, community-wide Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Readiness Strategy; the transition of City’s DASH public transit system to battery-electric busses; and initiatives to implement zero-emission battery-electric school busses in the Alexandria City Public Schools. The talk will discuss these initiatives in context of broader greenhouse gas emission reductions and clean energy goals as outlined in the City’s Environmental Action Plan 2040 sustainability plan, and the efforts of the City’s Energy and Climate Change Action Plan update process.
