IEEE R8 Entrepreneurship Initiative Introduction
The IEEE Region 8 Entrepreneurship Initiative is an initiative started in 2018 and led by the IEEE Region 8 Young Professionals team aimed at the segment of existing and potential members that habit the Entrepreneurship ecosystem. The end-goal of this Initiative is three-folded: to strengthen the knowledge of our young entrepreneurs by providing them mentorship, boosting their network by putting them in contact with the relevant stakeholders, and getting them global exposure by sponsoring their participation in Summits and other Entrepreneurship events of the kind. We believe that IEEE encompasses a unique strength in this domain with technical foundations of the organization and
the ability to shape the entrepreneurship endeavor innovative and impactful.

Advance Technology for Humanity: Sustainable Engineering
The program “IEEE Region 8 Entrepreneurship Initiative“ this year is focused on the topic „Advance Technology for Humanity: Sustainable Engineering“ in form of a competition for established teams or formed startups that present their thematic solutions at a local competition. The rules for the competitions are:
- teams of 3-5 with at least one IEEE student or young professional member
- The startup should have a prototype or at least an MVP
- teams are allowed (and encouraged) to get external sponsors
- innovation is aligned with state-of-the-art in sustainable engineering

We value (evaluate):
- innovative and ambitious vision from the sustainable engineering area
- originality and “wow-effect”
- clarity, quality, and replicability of the innovation
- interdisciplinary approach

Best Pitching Teams

Three best teams from Kenya Section will be selected with their pitch presentations recorded and sent to the regional level “IEEE Pitch” to the global evaluators, experts in the domain, IEEE volunteers in Region 8 and beyond. Among the gathered pool of pitching presentations, several
best teams from Region 8 will then be selected for the mentorship phase of steering them towards getting funds and reaching the market successfully. The mentorship phase is set to the beginning of the year, with finals held at a high-class IEEE international event such as IEEE Region 8 Student and Young Professionals Congress (R8 SYP) or Rising Stars conference, and possibly outside IEEE such as Web Summit or Wolves Summit. Finally, we aim to emphasize the most significant opportunity that IEEE brings to startups: being a global network of technology experts – now also supplemented with a perception of available experts in the entrepreneurship area.
