Dr. Naresh Chand

Topic:

Building a Career in Photonics and available resources from IEEE and the IEEE Photonics Society

Talk will be about how to build a career in Photonics and how IEEE Photonics Society can help.

Biography:

Presently Dr. Naresh Chand represents IEEE Photonics Society in multiple voluntary capacities. Recently he retired from the US R&D Center of Huawei Technologies in NJ where he was working on developing low-cost advanced technologies for Ultra-Broadband Optical Access Networks since 2011. Prior to this, he worked for BAE Systems (2003-11), Agere Systems (2001-03), AT&T/Lucent Bell Laboratories (1986-2000), and Dept of Electronics (now MeitY), Government of India (1974-79). His areas of research include optical communication systems, devices, and materials. He has several firsts and world records to his credit. He has authored > 180 research papers and 15 patents (issued).  In the Dept. of Electronics, Govt. of India, he was involved with the licensing and development of Electronic Component industry in India.

He did his M.Sc. (Tech) Electronics from BITS, Pilani with Gold Medal. On a British Commonwealth Scholarship, he did his M. Eng. and Ph.D. in EE from the University of Sheffield, UK. He also did 2 years post-doctoral research at the University of Illinois, Urbana, IL.

Dr. Naresh Chand is a Life Fellow of IEEE and the founder of Prakash Bharati to promote Photonics in India.

Topic:

A Career in Designing the Next Generation Internet

Talk will explore how to develop a career in the area of Fiber Optic Communications.

Biography:

Dr. Kasyapa Balemarthy received the B.Tech. degree from IIT-Kanpur, India and the Ph.D. degree from Georgia Tech, USA both in Electrical Engineering. He is currently with the Fiber Design and Systems Research department at OFS – a world-leader in the field of optical fibers and components, headquartered in Atlanta, USA. OFS was formerly the Optical Fiber Solutions division of Lucent Technologies – itself a pioneer in communications systems.

Dr. Kasyapa has over two decades of experience in the area of digital communications. Previously he was a Member of Technical Staff in the Advanced Data Communications Group at Bell Labs – the research arm of Lucent Technologies in Holmdel, USA. At Bell Labs, in the mid-to-late 1990’s he was working on pioneering DSL technologies for communications at a world-record breaking 50Mbps. While at Bell Labs, the unique characteristics of the nonlinear optical fiber channel attracted his interest.

Dr. Kasyapa currently works on the design and analysis of optical fibers for communication at bit rates of 400Gbps and beyond for data center, terrestrial and submarine networks constituting the next-generation Internet. He has recently developed a novel design approach that is currently being used to manufacture award-winning optical fibers for transmission at bit rates of 100Gbps and beyond for use within Data Centers around the world. This work was recognized with a Best Paper Prize by the IEEE Journal on Lightwave Technology. He has reviewed papers for the IEEE Journal on Lightwave Technology and the IEEE Photonics Technology Letters. Dr. Kasyapa has also served on the Technical Program Committee for various conferences including the European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC). His technical contributions have influenced various IEEE Ethernet standards.

Dr. Kasyapa is the current Chair of the Hyderabad Section of the IEEE Photonics Society. Previously he has served on the Executive Committee of IEEE ComSoc/DSP Jt. Chapter in Hyderabad. He loves to engage with college students and has given many invited talks at various colleges in and around Hyderabad. Dr. Kasyapa has taught at IIT-Hyderabad, primarily with the objective of imparting a practical perspective to students.
