Abstract: Production scheduling is a crucial task in modern steel production systems. The scheduling problems of a wire rod and bar rolling process is challenging in many steel plants, which has a direct impact on their production efficiency and profit. In those scheduling problems, batch scheduling, sequence-dependent setup time, release time, and due time constraints must be handled. In a single-objective scheduling problem, we aim to minimize the number of tardy jobs. To obtain its optimal solutions, a two-stage decomposition method is proposed. To solve industrial-size problem instances, an effective iterated greedy algorithm is presented. In a bi-objective scheduling problem, we aim to minimize both the number of tardy jobs and total setup time. To obtain its Pareto solutions, a memetic algorithm is designed, which integrates a nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) and local search methods. The presented algorithms for both single-objective and bi-objective scheduling problems are compared with competitive peers to show their high performance and thus have great potential to be used in industrial applications.
