Danny Plaugher of Virginians for High Speed Rail
The Track to the Transforming Rail in Virginia
Virginians for High Speed Rail (VHSR) is a non-profit founded in 1994 to educate and advocate for the expansion of fast, frequent, and reliable passenger rail service connecting Virginia to destinations up and down the east coast. Among their accomplishments over the past several years is expansion of Amtrak Northeast Regional service to Norfolk and Roanoke, increase in the frequency of rail service, and acquisition of part of the Richmond-Washington railroad right of way by the Commonwealth of Virginia. But that's just the beginning - they have bold, ambitious plans for continued growth and expansion of passenger rail. Danny's presentation will discuss past successes and goals for the future -- both the positive news and challenges that they face.
Biography:
Danny Plaugher serves as the executive director of Virginians for High Speed Rail (VHSR). He joined VHSR in 2007 where he helped to create the Virginia Intercity Passenger Rail Operating and Capital Fund (IPROC) and make Virginia the first state with a dedicated funding source for passenger rail. In addition to his work with VHSR, Danny joined the Virginia Transit Association (VTA) in 2019 as deputy director to lead their policy and outreach efforts.
Danny serves on the Transportation Working Group for the Capital Region Collaborative, the board of RVA Rapid Transit, rail advisor for the RVA-757 Collaborative, treasurer of the Virginia Rail Policy Institute, and is a proud member of the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Alumni Association. In 2011, Danny was honored to be named one of Richmond’s Top 40 under 40 by Style Weekly magazine and one of VCU’s Top 10 Graduates of the Last Decade in 2016. In 2018, he was made the first honorary member of VCU’s Pi Sigma Alpha honor society in the society’s 30-year history.
He is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University; and he lives in the West End of Henrico with his wife Jan, son Benjamin, and two dogs Jax and Lily.
