Inspace.chat: A better zoom replacement?

In one moment in March 2020, the world became extremely virtualized. Colleges and schools across the country and world moved to remote instruction. Educators were caught by surprise. We needed to learn how to connect with our students in an online environment and what that might look like. Education has to work. We owe it to our students and children. If that means using software development and building something from the ground up, putting student and teacher experience at the center of the platform, then that is what we need to do. And that is what we did. Our first inclination was to collaborate with companies in the video conferencing space to make something that works better for education, but we quickly realized a fundamental rethinking was necessary and that would not be possible with existing companies. When we first showed our platform to colleagues, they immediately realized the impact and potential value added to our teaching experiences and wanted to start using InSpace right away. The support and excitement we have seen from our colleagues and fellow educators energized us to move at an incredible speed to bring the platform to beta and offered as a pilot after a month of development.

Inspace.chat: A zoom replacement

Inspace uses Proximity to modulate the audio, and simulates more real life interactions, virtually.

Biography:

Narine Hall is an Assistant Professor and Program Director in Data Science at Champlain College where she has been a faculty member since 2015. Hall holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Complex Systems from the University of Vermont. Hall teaches multiple undergraduate courses in data science and has developed six new courses over the past three years.

Dr. Hall's research interests lie in the areas that include multidimensional analysis using self-organizing maps (a form of neural network), data mining, tunably rugged evolutionary landscapes, machine learning, cloud computing, and computational complexity. She is the co-founder and CTO of high-tech startup BlinkSecure Inc. and previously worked at Wolfram Research, IBM Watson, and Lycos Europe.
