In this talk, we will share experience designing, building, and testing a high-gain broadband antenna using free software and commonly found materials. We will overview basic antenna principles and describe processes and approaches to antenna system design from concept formulation to implementation and verification. The steps that will be presented are for the Log-Periodic Dipole Array (LPDA) antenna. LPDA antennas have been in a wide use for the roof-top reception of over-the-air television since the middle of last century. We will also touch on an overall end-to-end receiving system design and how the choice of an antenna contributes to combined wireless system performance.

This talk is a joint technical meeting of San Diego Chapters of Broadcast Technology, Communications,  Engineering Management, and Electromagnetic Compatibility Societies.
