USA Army Veteran Leads Innovation in Medical Technology with UroDev Medical and IntelliFlow Bladder Management System

ABSTRACT

Derek will discuss his experience as an entrepreneur in the Medical Device Industry. Specifically, he will discuss methods used to identify unmet needs in the industry and techniques to develop solutions to address these issues. Derek will discuss strategy development and the foundation for UroDev Medical and the IntelliFlow Bladder Management system. IntelliFlow is the first fully internal, extended use bladder management system that enables adult males with Urinary Retention to empty their bladder using a wireless remote controller. Derek will also discuss the Habit Camera, the first digital skin inspection tool for people with limited mobility, diabetes, and other skin conditions.

SPEAKER BIO:

Derek Herrera is an Entrepreneur, Advisor, and Board Member for multiple startups and non-profit organizations. Currently, he serves as the Founder and CTO of UroDev Medical (formerly Spinal Singularity), an early stage venture-backed medical device company that designs medical devices for Urological applications. Derek founded UroDev Medical in 2015 after graduating from the UCLA Anderson EMBA program.

Derek recently founded and launched the Habit Camera, the first low-cost digital skin inspection tool for people with limited mobility, diabetes, and other skin conditions. The Habit Camera also supports telehealth and enables patients to send images/videos to any caregivers/clinicians via text message or email. The product is currently available for pre-order at www.habit.camera

Derek also serves in advisory roles for other medical device startups focusing in areas including neuromodulation, intubation, and other areas of innovation.

Prior to this, Derek served as a Marine Infantry and Special Operations Officer. As an Infantry Officer Derek deployed twice, once to Iraq and once aboard naval vessels to various counties in the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Derek completed Special Operations training and became a Marine Raider in 2011. In 2012, he deployed to Afghanistan as a Team Commander and was shot and paralyzed from the chest down in an enemy firefight.

Derek currently serves as a Board Member for the American Technion Society – Western Region, a non-profit that supports the Technion, Israel’s Institute of Technology. He serves as Chairman and President of the Board for MedTechVets, a non-profit that assists military Veterans in finding meaningful careers in the MedTech and Life Science Industry. Derek is also the President of the Board of Directors for the Marine Raider Foundation, a non-profit that supports needs of the Marine Raider community.

Derek lives in San Clemente, CA with his wife, Maura, his twin boys, Hudson and Hunter, and his dog Shaggy.
