Advanced Motor Protection, how to protect VFD driven medium voltage motors
The Northern Virginia/Washington Jt Chapter of the Industrial Application Societies (IA34) in cooperation with the Northern Virginia/Washington Jt Chapter of Power and Energy Society (PE31) is pleased to present a webinar by Navid Binesh of Siemens on the topic of advanced motor protection with special emphasis on VFD driven medium voltage motors widely used in indutrial processes.
The webinar will review typical causes of motor failure, traditional motor protection relays and their limitations when applied with VFDs as well as the inherent motor protection features found in medium drives. The concept of Advanced Motor Protection (AMP), a collection of drive integrated extensive motor monitoring and protection functionality will be introduced. Some of the features include true variable speed thermal protection, ground fault detection, differential motor protection, mechanical jam protection, and undercurrent and underpower protections.

Advanced Motor Protection: How to protect VFD driven medium voltage motors
Today industrial equipment is designed with long lifecycles, however, over time site operating and environmental conditions may change, which can affect the life of the equipment. Such is the case when medium voltage motors are exposed to environmental and mechanical stresses. This can lead to motor degradation and malfunction. The monitoring and protection of medium voltage motors are essential elements in the overall industrial process protection.
In this webinar, we will review typical causes of motor failure, traditional motor protection relays and their limitations when applied with VFDs. We will cover the inherent motor protection features found in medium drives and finally, will introduce Advanced Motor Protection (AMP), a collection of drive integrated extensive motor monitoring and protection functionality. Some of the features include true variable speed thermal protection, ground fault detection, differential motor protection, mechanical jam protection, and undercurrent and underpower protections.
