Topic:

The 53% solution: Reaching Nova Scotia’s 2030 Emissions Target

Premier Rankin, echoing part of Nova Scotia’s 2019 Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act, has promised that by 2030, the province’s greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by at least 53% below 2005 levels. Reaching this target requires Nova Scotia Power to reduce its emissions from about seven megatonnes in 2018 to about half-a-megatonne in 2030.

In this presentation, we will examine the changes in Nova Scotia’s emissions by sector since 2005, the expected changes in Nova Scotia Power’s energy mix, and what the province will need to do to reach the 53% target if Nova Scotia Power is unable to reduce its emissions to
half-a-megatonne by 2030.
