DATA SCIENCE & ITS SOCIAL IMPACTS

 Data science and its social impacts were organized by IEEE WIE Lahore Section in collaboration with GCU Lahore on 2nd March 2020 at Government College University Lahore, as data science has become a revolutionary technology that everyone seems to talk about. This event was divided into two parts: 1. TECH TALKS; and 2. PANEL DISCUSSION. 1800+ students and 450+ professionals participated in the event including Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi - The Vice-Chancellor of Government College University, Lahore.

The event started with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Ihsan Mumtaz. Mr. Zahid Ali (WIE Volunteer, IEEE WIE GCU SB) hosted the event. Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi inaugurated the event, Mr. Ali Raza (Branch Counsellor - IEEE GCU Student Branch) and Ms. Ayesha (Advisor - WIE GCU Student Branch) Welcomed the guests. Dr. Asad Raza Kazmi - Head of Department, Computer Sciences explain the theme and objective of the event and permit to start the sessions.

In the panel discussion board, the following data scientists took part to highlight the social impacts of data science:

• Ali Raza- Branch Counsellor - IEEE GCU Student Branch, Assistant Professor - GCU Lahore

In tech talks, the following data scientists spoke to the students and professionals to present their perspective on the mentioned topics:

• Fakhar Abbas (Full-Stack Data Scientist) - Data Science and Machine learning; Big Opportunity? Big Hype? Big Mess?

Mr. Adnan Yousuf Kazi (Chief Operating Officer at Analytics) - How Data Science Is Transforming Our lives

At the end of the event, Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi - The Vice-Chancellor of Government College University, Lahore presented the souvenirs to the guest speakers and panelists, and after that refreshment was given to the guests and participants.

Impact of Event on Community: After this event, students were highly motivated and attracted to data science. It impacts every aspect of a social domain - from operations and effectiveness to future growth. The attendees learn:

1. How to Gather and analyze data to address questions about program efficacy and efficient targeting of resources.
2. How to choose organizational partners, implement change, build trust with organizations and civic agencies.
3. How to Satisfy the needs of stakeholders and manage legal, ethical, and logical constraints.
4. Started to innovate programs to solve the problem of inequality in young children’s development
5. Started greener operations for global communication.
