Meeting Description:

Please plan to attend this virtual meeting of the Industry Applications Society. The speaker will be Colin Gordon, Senior Research Engineer, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc.

We manufacturers are seeing an increase in market pressure for cryptographic security controls in our embedded products to protect SCADA communications, protection protocols, and engineering access sessions. While it may be trivial to implement IT-oriented cryptographic libraries and protocols, the susceptibility of the cryptographic security controls to standards changes, the expanded protocol attack surface, and cryptographic key management complexity are all downsides that (among others) have forced us to reconsider design and implementation strategies. This presentation will examine those concerns and contrast various encryption technologies such as MACsec, IPsec, and TLS against the goals of safety, reliability, and availability of critical embedded devices.
