This 2 day class by Jim Phillips, P.E., Secretary of IEEE 1584, teaches you how to perform the arc flash hazard calculation study based on IEEE 1584 – IEEE Guide for Performing Arc Flash Hazard Calculations. Learn how to properly model the system, make appropriate assumptions about data, learn why selections made for the calculations such as equipment type and working distance can have a big affect on the calculated incident energy. Hear Jim’s candid view about interpretations of the standards and the future direction of IEEE 1584.
You will be shown the effects of short circuit current and protective device clearing time on the hazard. See how to determine appropriate protective clothing and personal protective equipment. Learn how the information from an arc flash hazard calculations study can be used to complete the energized electrical work permit required by NFPA 70E. Discuss what information is really required on arc flash labels.
Jim will then show how to perform arc flash hazard calculations and studies based on IEEE 1584 – IEEE Guide for Performing Arc Flash Hazard. From data collection through the IEEE calculations, all the way to developing results and recommendations, it’s all there.
Using a series of calculation worksheets that Jim has developed, he shows you how to calculate the arcing short circuit current, incident energy for AC and DC arc flash as well as the arc flash boundary. Also learn about the NESC requirements and the importance of the working distance, and equipment type. Jim also takes you behind the scenes to learn about the latest arc flash research and testing both in the United States as well as Europe.
