The objective of this lecture is to present Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) techniques for radar detection leveraging the use of statistical decision theory. The concept of CFAR is introduced together with the basic CFAR architecture. Some common schemes in radar practice such as Cell Averaging CFAR (CA-CFAR), Greatest Of CFAR (GO-CFAR), and Order Statistics CFAR (OS-CFAR) are discussed. Besides, their performance is assessed in some scenarios of radar interest. Finally, a connection between CFAR and the statistical theory of invariance is established providing a methodology to force the CFAR property when designing a radar detector.
