This talk, “People Skills in a Competitive Environment,” will present information which should be useful to the professional development of individuals who work in technical fields.  The competitive environment will be defined, people skills will be identified, and the application of these skills will be discussed.  Methods of skill assessment will be presented including the idea of using performance evaluations to improve the skills.  A self-assessment of skills will be discussed along with ideas for skills improvement.  Humor is used during the presentation.  Participants will be encouraged to ask questions.

Biography:

Joe Lillie received the B.S. in Electrical Engineering (1974) and the M.S. in Telecommunications (1997) from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now University of Louisiana Lafayette.  He has 45 years’ experience in telecommunications engineering and management and was employed by BellSouth Telecommunications 1973-2002. During these years, Joe held positions of Design Engineer, Planner, Support Manager, Engineering Manager and Planning Manager.  When Joe retired in 2002 he was on the Louisiana State Staff providing engineering and construction support. In 2003 Joe joined NorthStar Communications as Director of Corporate Quality.  In September 2005 Joe returned to BellSouth working on Hurricane Katrina restoration. Joe also performed Quality Management System internal audits to the ISO9000, TL9000 and M-1003 standards.  During his professional career Joe has attended numerous training sessions on telephony, management, leadership, contract administration, and quality management.  Joe has been married to Debbie for 49 years. They have two children, both Electrical Engineers, and five grandchildren.

Joe has been an active IEEE volunteer since joining as a Student in 1972, becoming a Member in 1974 and a Senior Member in 1987.  His IEEE activities include past service on the IEEE Board of Directors as the Vice President of MGA, IEEE Treasurer and Region 5 Director.  He served on the IEEE Consumer Electronics Society Board of Governors as a Member and Treasurer.  Joe is a past member of the IEEE Smart Village Steering Committee serving as the Finance Chair.  He is an IEEE Foundation Director Emeritus having served on the IEEE Foundation Board of Directors as a Director and Treasurer.

Joe currently serves on several IEEE committees and is the IEEE Immediate Past Treasurer.
