IEEE SCV WIE Digital Reality Webinar Series - Part 3

This webinar series will address the status of Digital Transformation in several areas (both as geography—North and Latin America, Europe, Far East Asia—and as market segments such as healthcare, manufacturing, retail, education). In addition, they will cover the expected evolution considering the impact of the pandemic and the recovery effort put in place by several Governments, including EU and US initiatives.

In particular, the ongoing evolution of Industry 4.0 with the Gaia-X initiative in Europe will be addressed. This initiative, although fostered by EU, is already involving 200+ industries from all over the world, comprised by major US players in the Information Technology sector.

Nicholas Napp of Co-founder of Xmark Labs

Digital Transformation

This talk is based on papers published in the Future Directions Digital Reality Initiative whitepaper, and in the September 2020 issue of IEEE CommSoc Technology News. The papers were inspired by a series of dinner conversations, held over many months during the COVID-19 lockdown, between Mr. Napp and Ms. Napp-Vega. These conversations started with a general discussion of the pace of technology development, which was presented as a net benefit to society by Mr. Napp. However, Ms. Napp-Vega was quick to point out the potential societal challenges that rapid technological development can present. Mr. Napp has worked in technology-related fields for 25+ years, often at or near the bleeding edge of technology. Ms. Napp-Vega is an ardent student of history, but also a digital native. In this talk, we will present a summary of our discussion, highlight the significant challenges presented by the Digital Divide, and finally explain why the Digital Divide itself is not what we should be focusing on.

Nicholas Napp is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and co-founder of Xmark Labs, LLC. He is a Steering Committee Member for IEEE's Digital Reality Initiative, and Chair of an IEEE Standards Working Group exploring trust and safety in online gaming. Nicholas has brought over 40 products to market across a wide range of consumer and enterprise markets. He is particularly focused on the practical application of Digital Transformation to accelerate business growth. His prior roles include leading multiple startups; Lead External Technology Scout, North America for Sony Ericsson; and Vice-President, Animation, Rainbow Studios (sold to THQ, inc.). He is also Chairman of the Board at FabNewport, a non-profit makerspace for middle school and older students.
