Digital Transformation
This talk is based on papers published in the Future Directions Digital Reality Initiative whitepaper, and in the September 2020 issue of IEEE CommSoc Technology News. The papers were inspired by a series of dinner conversations, held over many months during the COVID-19 lockdown, between Mr. Napp and Ms. Napp-Vega. These conversations started with a general discussion of the pace of technology development, which was presented as a net benefit to society by Mr. Napp. However, Ms. Napp-Vega was quick to point out the potential societal challenges that rapid technological development can present. Mr. Napp has worked in technology-related fields for 25+ years, often at or near the bleeding edge of technology. Ms. Napp-Vega is an ardent student of history, but also a digital native. In this talk, we will present a summary of our discussion, highlight the significant challenges presented by the Digital Divide, and finally explain why the Digital Divide itself is not what we should be focusing on.
