IEEE 2021 Rising Stars Winner: Combating COVID-19 with technology


At a recent 2021 IEEE Rising Stars Global Conference Poster Competition Program (held in January 2021), Young Katie Pascavis from Arizona State University won the Judges award for her innovation titled: “From COVID-19 to sustainable sanitation: novel, low-cost vaporized hydrogen peroxide and ozone gas sterilization systems.”

Katie along with one of her fellow participants - Nathaniel  Ortiz - have been invited to give a full 40 minute presentation on this (now that the final  exams are done with). Everyone in the IEEE Southeastern Michigan Section is invited to view this and interact with Katie & Nathaniel via Webex.

At a recent 2021 IEEE Rising Stars Global Conference Poster Competition Program (held in January 2021), Young Katie Pascavis from Arizona State University won the Judges award for her innovation titled: “From COVID-19 to sustainable sanitation: novel, low-cost vaporized hydrogen peroxide and ozone gas sterilization systems.”

Biography:

Katie Pascavis is a sophomore at Arizona Atate University studying mechanical engineering and global health.  She is a co-team lead for the ASU’s Engineers Without Borders international team designing a rainwater catchment system for Naki, Kenya.  She works as a researcher and team lead for Luminosity Lab, an interdisciplinary research and development lab, on COVID-19 response projects, including the XPRIZE Next Gen mask and gaseous sterilization systems.

Biography:

Nathaniel, a second-year Barrett Honors College student at Arizona State University, majoring in Biological Sciences, Applied Quantitative Science, Political Science, and History. He is an intern for Creosote Partners Lobbying Firm where he spends his time focused on value-based community advocacy, including working with clients promoting criminal justice reform, healthcare access and environmental justice. Nathaniel’s work has been important in building partnerships and creating educational tools through Luminosity Lab, a prominent research and development lab that prototypes innovative solutions to societal challenges.
